The Sign Union flag, which has come to represent global signing people’s citizenship, was designed by Arnaud Balard, a DeafBlind French artist, in 2013. Balard created the flag after a careful study of flags (vexillology) with a graphic open hand. Its colors represent the following concepts:

Dark blue background: Deafhood and Humanity (celebrating Deaf gain and challenging audism)
Yellow: Light, Hope, and Enlightenment (hand outline signifies protactile sign language)
Turquoise: handshape represents sign languages, our most cherished value, that binds our communities together worldwide.

On July 9, 2023 the World Federation of the Deaf voted on different flags to decide which would become the official representation of Signing people across the globe and Arnaud Balard’s Sign Union flag won. A fitting 10th anniversary recognition.
